Every hosting provider pushes annual billing with a big discount badge. Sometimes that's a genuine saving. Sometimes the "monthly price" shown is only available if you pay annually, and the real monthly rate is much higher. Here's how to actually work out which is cheaper for you.

Most hosting pricing pages display a per-month figure that's actually the annual plan divided by 12 — not the price you'd pay if you genuinely billed monthly. The true monthly-billing rate is often 25-40% higher per month. That gap is the real "discount" for committing annually, not the flashy percentage badge.

When Monthly Actually Makes Sense

• You're testing a new project that might get shut down in 2-3 months — paying annually for something you may abandon wastes money regardless of the discount.

• You're not sure about the provider yet — pay monthly for the first cycle, confirm uptime and support quality, then switch to annual once you trust it.

When Annual (or Longer) Wins

• Established, stable projects — a business website or client project you know will run for years should lock in the annual or biennial rate.
• You want to stop thinking about it — one payment a year (or every two years) means no risk of a card failing and the site going down mid-month.
• The discount is real, not renewal bait — verify the renewal price, not just the first-year price (see below).

The most important number isn't the first-year price — it's the renewal price. Many providers advertise a steep first-year discount, then renew at 2-3x that rate automatically. Always check the renewal price before committing, and set a calendar reminder ~2 weeks before your renewal date so you're not surprised by an unexpected charge or, worse, an expired domain/hosting.

If you're confident the site/project will exist in 12 months, pay annually — the discount is close to free money. If there's real uncertainty about whether the project continues, pay monthly and accept the premium as the cost of flexibility.
