Pterodactyl Game Panel Basics
Every Hoststack game server — Minecraft, Rust, ARK, CS2 and more — is managed through the Pterodactyl panel. It's built specifically for game hosting, so it looks a little different from cPanel or a VPS dashboard. Here's a tour of the essentials.
The server overview page
When you log in and select your server, you land on the overview page. This shows live CPU, RAM and disk usage, the server's IP address and port, and the power controls — Start, Stop, Restart and Kill (a force-stop for a frozen server). The console panel underneath shows real-time log output and lets you type commands directly, just like the game's native console.
Key sections in the sidebar
- File Manager — browse, edit, upload and zip server files straight from the browser
- Databases — create MySQL databases for plugins or mods that need one
- Backups — take on-demand backups and download or restore them with one click
- Schedules — automate tasks like restarts, backups or command broadcasts on a timer
- Users — grant a friend or co-admin limited access without sharing your main login
- Startup — change the server version, game egg, or startup parameters
Editing server settings
Most games store their settings in a config file (like server.properties for Minecraft) that you can edit directly through the File Manager's built-in text editor. Changes take effect after a restart — always double check syntax before saving, since a broken config can prevent the server from starting.
Scheduling backups
Go to Backups → Create Backup for a manual snapshot, or set up a recurring schedule under the Schedules tab so you never lose progress to a bad plugin update or accidental world edit. We recommend keeping at least two recent backups before installing anything experimental.
